Technique features

In this task I shell talk about one TV show and I will go into depth about 2 camera shots, camera movements, sounds and three editing techniques. The show that I have decided to talk about is the big bang theory and the genre of the big theory is a sitcom.

The big bang theory first aired in September 24, 2007. In the big bang theory you can hear the back stage of an audience laughing. This is also used repeatedly in other sitcom TV shows.  The audience laughing is none diegetic sound which only the audience can hear and not the characters. This is so the audience can laugh with the sound given off in a scene. This is only to affect the audience and not the character in anyone. This sound is also used to influence the audience to laugh.  The big bang theory has editing techniques such as cut and paste. Cut and paste can be used to show a different angle of a scene while two or more people are talking to each other.

One of the best things the big bang theory is good at his using camera technique between two or more people having a conversation. At first you see the camera focused on the door of the store. Then Sheldon and his friend’s enter the store and the camera slowly moves back getting a better look at the store just slightly. Camera also starts with a long shot and then turns to a medium focusing nothing but the character them self’s after that. They would keep switching back and fourth with no movement what so ever. This is clearly shown when both when Sheldon and Amy are talking and facing each other. This scene uses an eye level shot as you can almost see the characters whole body. This camera shot was used at a great time, as it’s two people meeting each other along with meeting a new character that you’ve never seen before in the big bang. This camera shot makes the character look down to earth and get to know what kind of person she is. You can also feel sense awkwardness in this scene.  As everyone meets new people it can be awkward some times the eyes camera shot represents that perfectly.

In this video the characters in the big bang theory get into an argument. This leads to one of the character getting mad and walking off stage blaming her hand on to the table and leaving the scene and slamming a down while done. This would be a digerati sound as the characters and the audiences can hear the effect. this effect the character as they are in a state of shock to what just happened and so can the audience. This would also be considered a close medium shot as everyone is sitting on the stable. But some people start walking out of the stage and the camera turns from medium shot to medium long shot.

Unit 1-- Assignment 1-- Legal Issues and Regulations

I will be discussing and researching into different media institutions which are responsible for regulations in the media. The institutions I have been asked to research into are ; British Board of Film classification and Advertising Standards authorities.

Firstly the BBFC play a major role in assisting the public. Audiences who watch films, are given regulations and restrictions as to what is seen appropriate and what isn't. On the other hand, you could argue that the BBFC may also go against films, to some extent. For instance if a film's director originally aimed an action film which contained some violence but mostly bad language, at teens and up, then got a restriction the film. The BBFC decides to classify it as an 18+ film, then the film loses half of it's audience members.

To the right is a video brief of the work of the BBFC, it explain what their work involves and what their purpose for regulations is. It was interesting to listen to the way that classification of films are decided, although no one every really pays much attention to the classification symbols, it is an extremely vital thing to consider when going to the movies. After all you don't want to turn up and they tell you that you're too young to watch the film you wanted. This has happened to me several times. Which brings me to conclude that the BBFC as an industry don't really get their work out publicly , because i wasn't aware of them until I learnt about them in class, which is quite a disappointment!

Below is the BBFC's latest film classification on the new release ' The Force Awakens' from Disney. This examples show you how they set out everything that needs concern. Whether that be their insight or the running time. This is on their website and the public have access to it, in order to check before they go and watch the film.

Analysing sound techniques and single camera production

There are so many skills used and movies that you might not be aware about I’m here to tell you about some of these skills used in movies.  For this task I will choose three movies and the topic will be about single camera production and sound techniques used.

I will first start by talking about sound techniques.  The movie first movie I have chosen to do an example on is the dark knight. In this one-minute clip of the movie the dark knight there is a very slow and low rhythm in the background.  In the short clip there are two people talking and the music in the background keeps building up like a drum beat the scene is becoming more intense by the second you get two see people getting pointed a gun at their heads with a scared look on their faces. This is to show how the character is feel at that moment even with them talking.  There is only one person talking with throughout this whole clip about his past.  From his dialogue you can clearly understand that the joker had a metal health issue when he was at a young age given by his short backstory.  As he keeps talking he uses a man as an example of what happened to him by putting a knight in the persons mouth and slowly push the blade against the person inner check.

Music is building up and gets higher creating more suspense. As soon as the joker ends history the music end with a really high bang effect. This was to show how terrifying this scene was and make more intense how the person died in the scene as he had blade in his mouth not being able to do anything, as there were other people with guns around. One of the techniques used here is diegetic sound. Diegetic sound is a sound technique which only the audience can hear and not the characters in the movie this technique is used in the production of a movie.  I would say that is skill is used to create mostly suspense to a movie. I think this because it makes a movie feel much better then it is and also creates a better atmosphere for the people watching the movie.

Another movie I have chosen is the transporter 3.  This is almost a four-minute movie. But in the background you hear a lot of sound effect in the fight scene to ear how much people are getting hurt. The back I think is to represent the main character of the movie and his calm sense when fighting every one surrounding him in this clip. It’s a great way to the audience focused what is on is happening. The hit impacts in this movie are all diegetic as it’s just a movie and not a real fight after all it’s a movie all the special effect they used for the sound was after the production.  You get a drums in the background going slow, fast and stops for a few second and continues again for the action and overall the audiences entertainment.

Single camera production is a video, which is basically only recorded with one camera. Single camera production can be used in movie, shows and more. Single camera are not used as often as multi camera as multi camera are mostly done by high budget movies. While single camera movie often have a very low budget. Single camera is often used in movie to create more realism to a movie then a multi camera movie as much as possible.

The benefits of using a single camera would be that it creates a more believable world in the movie no matter the movie. It cost less as you just buying only one single camera it also take less editing with a single camera. Single camera also using tracking shot something you rarely see in multi camera movies and show.  Sometimes the single camera recording is has jerky movements in them making movies and TV shows a little armature and unprofessional as the camera might be movie with someone carrying it.

Show that I have decided to use, as an example is the modern family. Most TV shows now are days are multi camera, which does make this show stand out from the normal crowd.  The show doesnt always relay and cut and edit like most multi camera movies and shows. It also zooms in and moves around while recording without cut and edit.  Movement is needed in movie and TV shows because without them looking at something in one angle would be boring.

There some movies that use tracking shot through the movie but most often these movies are unprofessional and honestly boring to most people. Movies such as troll, rec, area 51 and more. These movies stand out from the normal, as it seems like you are there through out the movie experiencing everything that they are going through kind of like 3D effect but better since every thing seems like it’s in first person.

Unit 22 assignment 1 single camera format

Series and serials can either be a movie or even a TV show.  Most often TV shows are serials like the James bond TV shows, Sherlock homes, and American dad. It’s as if the episode before that had no impact on the character starting with a band new blank sleight to the TV show or movie narrative.

Series carry on a story for more than one episode or movie which can carry then for a very long some TV have even been running for over 20 year and still haven’t ended to this very day.
The advantages of Series on the other hand take the time to build up their characters so that the character can feel somewhat realistic to the audience.

Some example of shows for series would be the Dare devil, breaking bad, American horror story which are great example of audience getting to know the characters better and what type of person the characters truly are. You may know the characters almost like an acquaintances and this is one of reason the audience watches series they feel more engaged into then a serials because they have to put time and effort to understand the story and character where this will go by the end of the TV show or movie. Series can also lead the audience to like characters in series more than serials because they the character for a longer time then the serial this may lead the audience to be really attached to them and even relate to them in some sort of way.

Series like the dare devil  is a prequel  that has the main character had a normal child later to be in an accident that leaves him blind changing his life forever along with him becoming an orphan.  Later In the series you see that the main character has grown up and becomes a lawyer of justice.  This can easily be represent that people can become great at anything as long as they don’t let anything get in their way and this is represented by his disability of not being able to see which he doesn’t let get the best of him. You begin to get attached to this character if you agree with his morals of life and people. Now if dare devil was to be a serials it wouldn’t be so different as its most about the main character help people each episode and solving question and overall being a hero but there would be less character development for the main character and for there to be a great of overall story
The advantage of watching serials is that you don’t need to follow the story each episode.

So you don’t need to watch the first episode to know what is going on and since it’s a standalone episode or movie it can make the audience satisfied as it’s just one depending story by itself. Depending on your taste you may like serials over series. But why is this?  Well serials only have one story so there is no sequel to that story and no continuation to it either. Some people like a short story and takes less of the audience’s free time then series do so they get to do other things instead if they don’t have so much free time  to watch series. Serials often have a closed ending to each TV episode or movie ending while series often leave the audience with a cliff hanger each episode which some audience are not too pleased about making some of the audience unsatisfied of a series episode or movies that get a squeal.  So for audience that have a very short attention span would probably watch serials they don’t much thinking and dedications to them.
