Todorov's Narrative structure

Narrative structure is one the most important things when it comes to any movie or TV show as it wouldn't really make sense if the story was everywhere with a lot of flash backs and flash forwards every second. So when comes down to how a movie represents itself and its story line it can make the viewer judge the movie before they have even completely watched and they are 10 minutes into it. By at least the first 20 minutes of a movie a director has to come up with an interesting ideas in how they want the viewer to keep watching on or otherwise it can be a boring and long movie to get through and most people just wants to sit down and relax when they have a stressful day. A movies is part of that entertainment we get when we have free time and this why a narrative structure should be somewhat be clear in what it’s trying to do and make the viewer even stick around to keep watching the whole movie until the very end. There are 5 narrative structure the equilibrium, disruption, recognition, repair, new equilibrium.

Equilibrium is the starting line of narrative story where everything is normal and everyone is going on about their daily lives. Everything at this point should introduce the main cast of characters.

The disruption is the opposite of the equilibrium where something is wrong and it need to be solved and things are not as they should be this also where the adventure starts. This can be when an evil antagonist appears in the movie.

The recognition is founding out the source of the problem and knows how to deal with if think of it like an equal sign in math.

The repair is resolving the problem this is the climax of a movie which can be some kind of giant battle this is also the most exciting part of the movie.

The new equilibrium is like the equilibrium but some might be different after the story has ended this is this is the new normal.

The movie that I'll be using so I can show you an example of a narrative structure is frozen an animated movie by the company Disney which was released in 8th of December 2013 and has sold over $1.219 billion at the box office and is known for being the fifth money made movie.

First of you get introduced to the main characters Elsa and Ana living about their normal daily lives as princesses this is the equilibrium. At the start of the movie you see Ana waking up her sister Elsa to play with saying “Do you wanna build a snow man?” This set up the start of the movie how everything is cheerful and happy for the start of the movie equilibrium.

Second phase would be when Ana’s and Elsa’s are playing and then by accident Elsa strikes Ana in face with her ice magic causing Ana to be unconscious. Another that Ana's and Elsa's parents die years pass by and later on Elsa loses control over her powers. This is the disruption as thing are not as they use to be and have changed because of this.

The third would be the recognition which has Ana which Elsa’s sister go after her to stop the whole world from snowing because it wouldn't stop and trying to get her sister back to where she truly belongs as the queen of her castle.

The fourth would be the repair where Ana meets Elsa and comes back to their castle and finds Ana frozen solid like a statue. Which then makes Elsa cry so much that she ends up freezing everything in her range which makes the entire place turn into a blizzard? Elsa then finds Ana hugging her frozen solid body while crying this then makes Ana magically become warm and soon go back to normal.

The fifth would be when Elsa becomes queen again of her castle and has control over her ice magical along with the village people being joyful and Ana Elsa sister. The bad people also known as the villains that made Ana's and Elsa's life a living hell are banished from ever returning to Elsa's Castle. This the ending of the story and everyone lives happily ever after and that’s the end of the story this is also the new equilibrium.

Now I’ll chose another movie that doesn’t so much of a narrative structure but actually has a none linear story line which means that the story will have flash backs and the movie might actually start of the end then the beaning of a movie where most movie start from. So when you movie has a present day in the movie it gives out slight hints what to expect from the movie then the past of a movie.

The movie I’ll be choosing to show for this non narrative structure example will be the book thief which came out 201.  First the he main character is a young female who is on a train with her mother and brother. Soon after you the protagonist’s younger brother coughing and spitting out blood and soon dies because of bad condition he was in.

Second would be the when the main character gets taken away from her mother and is put up for adoption because her mother doesn’t have the right condition to rise a child up.

Third is when the main character discovers that she is in danger since she is from a commonest family. She was in danger because the story was set in Germany around world war two which why she was in danger and she might have been killed or set to a concentration camp.

Forth is when the female protagonist is taught how to read and write  by the Jew which is hiding in basement because if he was to get caught by Germans roaming around the street they would surely force him against his own will and make him go to concentration camp where he would  probably die.

Fifth would be the ending of the movie where the protagonist’s whole adopted family dies from a bomb on a plane. Years later the main character get old and dies.
